- nausea,
- abdominal cramps, and
- vomiting.
Chances are, that if you have had these symptoms, you may have been a victim of symptoms of gastroenteritis or commonly called the stomach flu. And, today I will be sharing with you what I have learned about stomach flu through the power of the internet.
What is “The Stomach Flu”?
Stomach flu is also known as Gastroenteritis or an inflammation or stomach infection caused by a virus. Stomach flu symptoms are diarrhea and vomiting. It is really annoying and painful, when you are always going back and forth to the Restroom. And in the long run if you don’t take enough fluids you may get dehydrated.
The Stomach Flu is the second most common illness in USA which causes around 50,000 hospitalizations every year (I have read that in familyrapp.com). The stomach virus can be passed on from person to person via contaminated silverware, food as well as water. This stomach virus can be contagious. If improper hand-wash, improper sterilization or improper hygiene is practiced there is a great tendency of having diarrhea and much worst, having an outbreak. Mostly, viral gastroenteritis outbreak is common in hospitals, schools, jails, dorms, care facilities and cruise ships.
Diarrhea and Its Causes
The leading stomach virus responsible for diarrhea is called Rotovirus. Most children when affected by this virus of the stomach suffer around 5 to 7 days. Symptoms are fever and severe stomach pain. Meanwhile, adults may only suffer 1 or 2 days if affected by Rotovirus.
Another stomach virus that can also be responsible for diarrhea is Calicivirus. It can affect people of all ages. Calicivirus causes vomiting, body ache and exhaustion.
On the other hand Adenovirus spreads stomach flu on children of ages 2 years and below. Same as other virus, effects are diarrhea, vomiting and body pain.
During the winter, another stomach virus that causes stomach flu breeds. Its the Astrovirus. Astrovirus affects people of all ages especially on people of reduced immunity like children and adult. If a person is infected by this virus, the stomach virus symptoms can only be observed 3 days after the infection.
How to avoid the Stomach Flu
It has always been said and is always true, “Prevention is better than cure”. In order to get rid of the “the stomach flu” one should avoid sharing drinks, food as well as utensils should the other person is affected by a stomach flu. Proper hand washing, as I have mentioned above is necessary. As much as possible we have to sterilize everything we use to eat or even utensils used to prepare foods. Everyone should observe cleanliness because it is in this way everyone can get rid of this illness.
The Stomach Flu Treatment
The first thing a person loses when having stomach flu is body fluid. Thus we need to supply our body as much fluid as possible to get rid of dehydration. We have to maintain a balanced level of fluid in our body. Light juices, water as well as electrolyte should be given to a patient often. Dairy products like milk, cheese and the like should be avoided. In order to get well immediately, the patient should wash his hands before eating and after going to the toilet.
These tips can be applied at home. Yet if the condition persists it is advisable to see your doctor asap.
The Stomach Flu Incubation Period
The stomach flu incubation period depends on the stomach virus that causes the illness and the capability of the infected person to resist the illness. It depends on his immune system.
If we base it on the stomach virus that infects a person, the following stomach flu incubation period can be observed.
Norovirus – If a person is infected by norovirus, the incubation period would be 1-3 days. The infected person have a great chance to spread the infection anytime until a week or two from recovery.
Rotavirus – Once rota virus is the virus that cause your stomach flu, then the incubation period is between 1- 2 days. With rotavirus, the infected person can spread the virus even before the symptoms are visible or felt.
Other virus like adenovirus has incubation period of around a week. On the other hand astovirus’ incubation period is also around 1 to 3 days.
